a new bog. sorry, blog.

[nb: i've cleaned out the old messages - you can view the archives over from the left]

well, its been a while since i last posted to my blog. since finishing my exams I've come down with a terrible illness: a social life. i'm sure I'll get over it soon enough.

so what's been happenin? on monday night i visited kush and talked to him for ages. i then got up earlier and handed my exam in on tuesday morning. then got home and slept for five more hours. got up. did stuff, though I'm not sure what. discovered that the US supreme court had handed down a decision on affirmative action on monday US time. annoying. though i agree with the logic of their decision -- affirmative action should be fair. what defines fair is a very difficult question though. not sure if its one the supreme court should be answering but theyve certainly reinvigorated the debate surround affirmative action again. which is good vis a visa: there was a letter to salon.com saying that all standardised tests are inherently racist. to which my response was 'ah, what do you propose then? that all individuals get their own individual tests? or that different genders and races get different tests?'. i think there's a point where we need to accept that people are not born equal. what affirmative action should do is try to create equality of opportunity - which requires a careful balancing act between formal equal and substantive equality. going too far to either side will result in greater inequity.

worked wednesday through friday. wednesday night i had drinkies with damo, kush and luke. that was crazy madness. saw the latest cut of reubens. Its coming along nicely.

[oh wow, fcp4 automatically went into rendering the goblin game cause its been idle for half an hour. seems their multithreading code is much better, cause this machine is still useable even with fcp4 rendering in the background. neat. fcp3 was very domineering of the cpu]

bought my nikon f-601 on thursday night. i probably paid a little too much for it (it usually goes for $50-100 less on ebay) but the guy lived on the north shore, and i'd rather pay a premium for piece of mind than get a fungaled camera from melbourne and have to post it back for a refund. turned out the guy is a first assistant editor and has worked on AOTC, dark city, matrix:rehashed, etc. etc. pretty neat.

we had a work lunch on friday at a chinese restaurant. good food. lots of chat.quite a breezy day! sadly our division has a reputation for being anti-social. which is why i get along with my fellow colleagues. its not that we're antisocial, we just like doing our own thing and having our own space. its probably also cause we're smarter than everyone else there :) [hahahaha heh]

went out to jackson's on friday night. that was fun. no women around tho. sad.

slept most of saturday. went to kush's house and just fucking jammed for like four hours. by jammed i mean i took my laptop loaded up with soundtrack and kush had his 1200s and record collection and we just beatmixed. i had the easier job given that soundtrack does the beatmixing for me! wow. its a neat neat program. its like infinite corporate video soundtracks in a computer. got home late.

saw metropolis today. fucking wow. fucking fucking wow. i was scared i'd be bored by it given that its long and silent. nope. it felt tight. tighter than most modern movies. the story was a bit contrived by modern standards but it just had an incredibly mastery to it.

scanned some photos from reubens tonight. i love film but scanning is tedious. tried out some photo album software. its great. totally flexible but its also $69.95US so i think i'll continue handcoding in html. thats why i think digital is better for snapshots. scanning is annoying. i'm happy to shoot film and scan the good photos (mb 4-6 a roll?) for tweaking. with snapshots you're less concerned with whats good and more concerned with just getting all your mates and shit. so much more to get through! ergh. anyway. trying to decide between the Canon IXUS 3 or the Pentax Optio S. Canon do have the edge in optics usually but the IXUS 2 isn't meant to be as good as the IXUS 4, so Ii'm not sure what the IXUS 3 is going to bring. i'm attracted to the small cameras but you obviously make huge compromises. you have a small imaging plane so you get a massive DOF (and i love my short DOF - I always shoot as wide as possible), its hard to focus a lens sharp on a postage stamp of a sensor, you lose a lot of manual control and you get a slow lens. but if i want a good piece of glass and a nice big imaging plane then i should just shoot with my slr! but then i wonder whether i want the middleground between size and control and sharpness. [ponders]

i'll make a decision after i get my car service bill. gotta replace front wheels and possibly get suspension looked at. ergh.

worked on the goblin game tonight. am putting fcp4 through its paces. currently rendering it all in high precision 32bit YUV - curious to see how it reduces banding. hopefully this will be a picture lock and i can do the sound mix. already got many projects lining up waiting to be done

doing an add monday/tuesday this week, another one (shot on 16mm) next weekend, then doing shootout the weekend after! you think i'd take a holiday but nup! glad to have freedom to work on my vanity projects. i was feeling a bit unvain of late. so eager to get stuck into these menteke clips. they are going to be killer.

oh yeah. i added a counter to the blog. so whack up me hits!
