Pet Peeve #2

When people dress up exploitation as opportunity... but don't even see the reality themselves*.

That really shits me. Have some fucking self awareness people. You're more likely to NOT piss me off if you actually knew what you were asking was exploitative.

Why is that asking someone to work long hours for little pay making shoes is a massive social injustice, while asking someone to work long hours for no pay making art is a form of fucking charity?

[grumble]

*A classic case of cognitive dissonance:

UPDATE: Just for the record, this has nothing to do with my employer.

  • As someone who has rarely been able to pay people anything (or at least anything close to what they deserve) for their services on my films, I take solace in the fact that all of these people have a love for the art they are making that the sweatshop laborers don't for those shoes. I think that makes all the difference in the world - when you love what you're doing, you're willing to do it for nothing. Of course, there are degrees to this...and as a responsible producer and a freelance editor, I can't stand the idea of not paying people...but if it comes time to make my next film and the budget is low and deferments must be made, I know I'll still be able to assemble a talented group of filmmakers to assist me.

  • ... but from your tone, I think the difference is that you see these volunteers as people who are assisting *you*. You're thankful of their time.

... my problem is people who think they are doing their volunteers a great service.

I'm just crappy because we pitched for that installation work about 3 weeks ago? They let us know today they want 30 minutes of material in a week... and they have almost no money.

  • Ah ha. I know exactly what you mean, in that case. The documentary I've been doing graphics and animation for has left me feeling exactly the same way. I won't hear for them for days or weeks, and then suddenly the cut's changed and I get a new list of deliverables and a sudden deadline, and I practically have to start over again from scratch.
