This is known as "chasing goose through the casino" as in "oh, that reminds me of this time when I was chasing goose through a casino in budapest or whatever is a fashionably derelict place to visit.

Totally agree. It's like the hostel circuit has become a glorified advertisement for the Lonely Planet travel book. I actually had more memorable times going into the wilderness, getting myself a room, seeing the sites and using my imagination. Pretty funny as the contrast with my previous trip was evident as I travelled.
