Got my 'HELP'* debt the other day.
In the 2004-2005 period, I paid $1600 towards my massive HECS debt ($35,000), however because of the interest on said debt (3% now), my debt only reduced by $800.
Without getting into facy maths, that means its going to take approximately 40 years to pay off my HECS debt.
Thankyou, Howard Government for giving me yet another reason to get the fuck out of this country**.
* I love the Howard government's mastery of Newspeak.
** Remember, Mr Howard had to pay zip nadda nothing zero zilch for his combined law degree.

Debt sucks. However...
Howard may not have paid for his degrees, at least up front, but that's hardly a reason for continue to shovel the burden of expensive (and extensive) higher education on to the taxpayer.
Most of whom do NOT go on to such extensive higher education. Last I heard, only 12% of Australians recieve a university level degree (feel free to correct). That means there's been a hell of lot of subsidising going on, especially when you consider that the vast majority of university placements go to relatively affluent, middle class families that can more easily afford it (compared to somone out in the less leafy suburbs in Battlerville)
_someone_ has to pay for your extensive (and expensive) higher education, no? You are far and away the primary beneficiary of that education, so it would seem just that you also help pay for it. The method of that payment, and the amounts involved is another story.
Of course, as you're now discovering, you get to pay for your education AND you as an alleged professional get slugged with ever increasing tax as well.

Yes got my HECS sorry HELP debt the other day.
I was under the impression that this was to be an interest free loan. On inquiring into this I am told it is not interest but "INDEXDATION DUE TO INFLATION". If it quacks like a duck... etc
Not to mention the fact my degree is so useless that 3 years out of uni I'm not even earning enough to pay any HECS...
Howard is a little ugly man who has an equally ugly little wife. I on the other hand have a great set of tits, fond memories of uni and a good sushi place near my house. He can go fcuk himself.
