blimps are cool

Tuesday, October 7

Productive Weekend.

i've heard a few people remark that the easiest way to be cool (design wise) these days was to use any sans serif font sans arial. i'd agree. [personally, my preference is for futura compressed and helvetica with an 80% horizontal squeeze]. but i think that to be extra cool with a sans serif font one needs to not use any capitals. capitals are for losers, as can be evidenced by all the blogs by designers i've been reading (mostly via noise.net.au). i have ergo decided to increase my director-like coolness by once-again eschewing capitals.

i've had a pretty productive long weekend. i got SDDL up and running, though i need to give it a kickstart. i wrote the treatment for menteke's johnny hajj and the zaazaas film clip. that took a while. i really wanted to write a shotlist but its around 200 shots... and shotlists are pretty boring to read when you're not the director. so i wrote a semi-shooting script style treatment. we'll see the reaction it gets.

i also got stuck into my shot list for the pegasys vid. thats around 100 shots. to be shot in a day. but its a lot of punch ins on needle-injecting action, so it shouldn't be too hard.

discovered that one of my friends has been headhunted to work on ROTK. sweet.

i plan to turn this into a semi photoblog. so here's the first photo. (by me of course)

check out shutterfly if you want an example of a good photoblog. :)

Screen Directing Discussion List

Then Screen Directing Discussion List is now open for business!

To subscribe surf over to Cinematography.net and join up.

But before you do, please read the following descriptions and terms and conditions of the list (also available here):

SDDL Description
================

First of all, I'd like to acknowledge the boundless generosity of Geoff Boyle, the owner of CML and Cinematography.net for making SDDL possible.

Please keep in mind that this list is a discussion of the art and craft of screen direction. Naturally, Direction does touch on all the other areas of film production and discussion of them is to be expected. However, please keep the conversations limited to their overlap with directing. There are plenty of excellent resources for writing, cinematography, vfx and editing online. If you don't understand how directing can be its own distinct craft then this is probably not the list for you. SDDL is not providing a forum for wannabe auteurs and one man crews; it is providing a forum to benefit screen directing per se.

That said, all industry professionals are encouraged to join and discuss screen directing and their relationship(s) with screen directors. One of our goals is to facilitate better communication between directors and their fellow collaborators. However, general bitching about directors is not encouraged and may result in a ban (it really depends on how constructive it is). SDDL also welcomes those who are interested in making the transition into directing either from being a student or from another film profession.

Joining the SDDL signifies that you accept the concept of an unrestricted exchange of ideas, opinions, suggestions, etc. by peers; and that, consequently, you release SDDL, SDDL members, CML, CML members and Cinematography.net from any and all possible legal action against them.

(Also, keep in mind that the SDDL does not necessarily endorse the ideas, opinions, suggestions, etc. made by members of the SDDL.)

Joining the SDDL also signifies that you agree to treat your peers with the same courtesy and respect that they will give you. While I recognise not everyone will agree with the ideas, opinions, suggestions, etc. expressed on the SDDL, unprofessional behaviour such as personal attacks, threats, unfounded criticism, etc. will not be tolerated. "Your peers" is not an a category exclusive to SDDL members - it is one which includes all our peers within this industry (and beyond)

At this stage SDDL is a general forum for screen directing in all its facets - comedy, drama, music videos, tvcs, educational, etc. If the list proves popular enough, then there will likely be spinoff lists which will focus on those areas. So please be tolerant of discussions which do not relate to your particular area of interest.

All messages must be signed, name, job description and location is best. This allows people to help you physically, facilitates local meetings between directors and crew, and helps us know your professional background.

You agree to not post the same message to more than one list.

You also agree to respect the copyright of these messages and not to reproduce them in any way without the express permission of the Listmums and the writer of the message.

Violations of these conditions will result in you being permanently removed from the SDDL.

You may post as soon as you have been accepted as a member, but it is advisable to watch and wait at first to see how the group operates -- your first few message will be slightly delayed to give the listmums a chance to check them anyway and to make sure you're not a dirty spammer.

I ask that you keep your postings short and to the point (not everyone has unlimited Internet access), respond privately to postings that would not be of interest to all subscribers, and post no advertising without permission. Plugging a project you have worked on is acceptable, if you agree that it will result in (hopefully) helpful criticism. Plugging a project for the sole purpose of getting votes in a film festival or hits for the website is NOT acceptable. We're here to discuss, not advertise. Likewise using SDDL to find crew for your latest project is NOT accepted -- there are other avenues for this.

Please remember that each message posted to the SDDL is received by all SDDL members. Depending on your individual mail program and it's settings a comment you make to a message from SDDL may go to the list or just the original poster. I suggest that you check that the message is going where you want it to. It can be very embarrassing otherwise!

Again, please keep your messages as brief and to the point as possible -- it is very easy to wax lyrical in an e-mail and to pretend you have more experience than you do (I do it all the time) and many would say waxing lyrical and hyperbole are essential elements of screen directing, but they don't make good e-mails :)

Keep your quoting to the absolute minimum; it helps me enormously when I (eventually) make up WebPages out of your postings. Of course there is a filter working that will bounce your entire message if you quote too much :-)

Feel free to use a smiley or similar symbols in your messages to convey irony, playfulness, sarcasm, humour, etc. - especially when your intuition warns you there is a chance of your posting being misinterpreted.

Also when posting if you're replying to a digest please change the subject line to the one form the original message. Otherwise we won't have any about what you're rambling about.
