For me, there is a subtle - yet vital - difference between a movie whose plot is driven by characters, and a movie whose characters are driven by the plot.

Put as a question for a budding screenwriter:

Am I trying to find characters to allow my plot to play out, or am I trying to find a plot to allow my characters to grow?

Ideally, they are the same.
