Vision of excellence
“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labour and his leisure, his information and his recreation,” reads Mulholland, tapping the page with his finger for emphasis. “He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him, he is always doing both.”
-- James Michener quoted in an article on work/life balance found via Chief Happiness Officer
I actually agree with this. Its what I seek and have been seeking for a long time. One of the happiest and creative periods of my life was when I was unemployed after finishing my first honours degree. In six months, I directed a play, produced and edited a tv pilot, directed a music video, did a whole bunch of writing (two scripts?) and video installations, worked on some AFTRS shorts, was teaching english, fixing computers, and shoot/editing corporates. My lifestyle was erratic. I was sleeping whenever and whereever I could -- at the theatre, on a floor, in my car -- but god I loved it.
Then I got a job.
